Scott Taylor on Understanding MySQL in WordPress

10 February 2013 by Remkus de Vries 2 Comments

Scott Taylor posted a very detailed write up about understanding MySQL in WordPress. Something I personally think every single WordPress developer – be it plugins or themes – ought to have a deep understanding of. Not just know of it’s existence. In Scott’s words:

You would be surprised how many people I have interviewed for a job that think their PHP chops are great, but their MySQL, not so much. Many great WordPress developers I know have said the same thing. Not cool. Bad SQL can bring down your site! Forget crazy scaling challenges, basic WP Query usage can bring your site down if you aren’t careful. WordPress is a framework that provides you with a lot out of the box, but you are still going to end up writing a bunch of your own PHP to make it work the way you want. The same should be true, but often isn’t, for SQL queries.

WordPress 3.6 will see some visual improvement on the admin side of things like for instance the Post Format UI is up for a change, but there’s more in the works. Right now there’s a ticket on Trac getting some attention regarding new icons. So, if you want your designer / UI voice to be heard, go make yourself be heard and comment on this trac ticket.

So what happens if you mix WordPress with Eminem lyrics featuring Dre? No, not that Dre, this Dre. This has to be the best WordPress rap ever. By possibly by the best Dre there is.

PressNomics v2 is in the Making

5 February 2013 by Remkus de Vries 2 Comments

If you own a WordPress business, the event to go to last year was PressNomics. In case you missed it and were sad about that – I sure was – it’s good to know there will be a second one.

It’s official. Planning is underway for PressNomics 2.0.

The idea of PressNomics is simple: Get the movers and shakers of the WordPress economy in the same physical place and bring in amazing business focused speakers to share their experience, add in some ample social time and see what happens.

Interested? Just drop your email over here.

1 February 2013 by Remkus de Vries Leave a Comment

Our very own Siobhan just released a post on Smashing Magazine offering advise to anyone beginning in the WordPress Community. Or in her own words:

This article is a result of their insight, and I hope that it provides some encouragement and guidance to newbies — whether you’re a user or a developer — as well as some tips for advanced WordPress users who continue to learn throughout their lives. With that in mind: WordPress community, take it away!

Go and see if you did it right 😉 .

A Casualty In A War Between Giants

22 January 2013 by Remkus de Vries 8 Comments

“At this point, I have one option that I personally can do; Remove my themes from ThemeForest. Doing so would mean my income would drop to $0 and I would have to lay off my one employee. This is not reasonable. Even if I moved my themes to another marketplace I’d take a hit of thousands of dollars a month.”

Whenever someone writes a paragraph like that and is talking about WordCamps & GPL, you know there will be an interesting debate going on in the comments.

Should this just be between the Foundation / WordCamp and Envato or is the current ruling correct?

Be Wary of The Infinite Loop

I was going to write an introduction to this post, but I think Dougal kinda nailed it with his own intro:

Herein is a cautionary tale about automated cross-posting between different social networking web services.
