If The WordPress Community is New To You, Here’s How To Become Part Of It

1 February 2013 by Remkus de Vries Leave a Comment

Our very own Siobhan just released a post on Smashing Magazine offering advise to anyone beginning in the WordPress Community. Or in her own words:

This article is a result of their insight, and I hope that it provides some encouragement and guidance to newbies — whether you’re a user or a developer — as well as some tips for advanced WordPress users who continue to learn throughout their lives. With that in mind: WordPress community, take it away!

Go and see if you did it right 😉 .

A Casualty In A War Between Giants

22 January 2013 by Remkus de Vries 8 Comments

“At this point, I have one option that I personally can do; Remove my themes from ThemeForest. Doing so would mean my income would drop to $0 and I would have to lay off my one employee. This is not reasonable. Even if I moved my themes to another marketplace I’d take a hit of thousands of dollars a month.”

Whenever someone writes a paragraph like that and is talking about WordCamps & GPL, you know there will be an interesting debate going on in the comments.

Should this just be between the Foundation / WordCamp and Envato or is the current ruling correct?

Be Wary of The Infinite Loop

10 January 2013 by Remkus de Vries Leave a Comment

I was going to write an introduction to this post, but I think Dougal kinda nailed it with his own intro:

Herein is a cautionary tale about automated cross-posting between different social networking web services.

The Post Formats UI Feature Coming to WordPress 3.6

8 January 2013 by Remkus de Vries 3 Comments

One of the WordPress features we use a lot here on WP Realm are the post formats. However, we do not use it in its default way, we use it the Alex King way.

So with that in mind it’s quite exciting to see WordPress 3.6 will have a strong focus on the Post Formats UI in general. Aaron Campbell writes:

Post formats is going to be a major win for 3.6. It’s one of those features that has so much potential, but it really falls short in usability and honestly we haven’t really taken the time to truly show what it can do. We’re going to re-think the admin UI for post formats

Do check out the post and most definitely comments if you’d like to contribute or have a specific opinion about it. [Read more…] about The Post Formats UI Feature Coming to WordPress 3.6

On Lightweights and WordPress

8 January 2013 by Remkus de Vries 3 Comments

A lot of people see WordPress as the be all end all solution for anything you can put on the web, an application platform as you like. But, not everyone agrees with this point of view for various reasons. Chris Lema wrote nice article that, for me, puts opinions like that in perspective. He calls it “The invasion of Lightweights”:

It’s the invasion of the lightweights.
And last night some guy who writes code using Rails and CodeIgniter hears that some WordPress guy is suggesting that people may want to use WordPress as an application platform. Much like every programmer before him, he can’t see it. He’s a hard core programmer. He likes his hard core tools. And he looks at the tools that new programmers might use (in this case WordPress), and all he sees are lightweights.

So, what’s your opinion, is Chris spot on or is he just trying to justify argument that WordPress could indeed be seen as an application platform?

Professional WordPress Second Edition is Out and About

7 January 2013 by Remkus de Vries Leave a Comment

Whenever people ask me to recommend a good learning book about general WordPress stuff, they pretty much always get the same answer. Well, they always got the same answer. Because as of today Professional WordPress has a second edition. Not familiar yet with Professional WordPress? This is what Brad Williams, one of the authors, has to say about it on his blog:

Professional WordPress is a book written by programmers for programmers. We take a more in-depth look at WordPress to help explain how WP works from the inside out. The book offers an overview of the WordPress loading process and steps through exactly what happens when a WordPress-generated web page is displayed. The book also covers extending WordPress functionality through custom plugins and creating website designs with custom themes and child themes.

Have you picked up or ordered your copy yet?
